La Provincia di Catania
With its about 1.067.000 inhabitants, Catania is the 9th Italian Province with the bigger demographic consistence. It is about the 1.80% of the national population.
Its living density is very high: 301,8 inhabitants for kmq.
It is useful now starting with the description of: THE PROVINCE and its GEOGRAPHICAL AREA
Catania is highly populated in its northern area. The southern area is the industrial and commrcial area of the city. About the 40% of people live in the northern hinterland very closely to the city center.
Then we have a series of small towns that we have called “metropolitan area“.
It is composed of 27 villages:
Aci Bonaccorsi, Aci Castello, Aci Catena, Aci Sant'Antonio, Acireale, Belpasso, Camporotondo Etneo, Catania, Gravina di Catania, Mascalcia, Misterbianco, Motta Sant'Anastasia, Nicolosi, Paternò, Pedara, Ragalna, San Giovanni La Punta, San Gregorio, San Pietro Clarenza, Santa Maria di Licodia, Santa Venerina, Trecastagni, Tremestieri Etneo, Valverde, Viagrande, Zafferana Etnea.
Then we have located two main important areas:
CALATINA AREA
It is situated in the south - east part of the provincial area. It is composed of 15 small towns:
Caltagirone, Castel di Judica, Grammichele, Licodia Eubea, Mazzarrone, Militello Val di Catania, Mineo, Mirabella Imbaccari, Palagonia, Raddusa, Ramacca, San Cono, San Michele di Ganzaria, Scordia, Vizzini.
Questi comuni, complessivamente, si estendono su un'area che corrisponde quasi alla metà dell'intera provincia;
MONTAIN - JONIC AREA
Adrano, Biancavilla, Bronte, Calatabiano, Castiglione di Sicilia, Giarre, Linguaglossa, Maletto, Maniace, Mascali, Milo, Piedimonte Etneo, Randazzo, Riposto, Sant'Alfio.

Population here is essentially composed of young people, under 14 years old. They are the 17.5% of the whole population. Old people, instead, are the 16.1% of the inhabitants. The presence of foreign people is not very high, we have about 1.136 foreigners for every 100.000 inhabitants.
SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECT
The Province of Catania is at the 12th place in Italy and at the first place in Sicily for its business enterprise ( about 84.965 legal enterprises ). The productive system is based on trade market ( 36.5%) other activities like shops and hotel ( 2.63%). It is very relevant the high number of individual activities ( 73%) and very small activities ( 84.1% ).
The problem of unemployment seems to be partly solved: from the 23.1% of 2002, to 22% of nowadays. Onother important problemis the economic condition of people living here: its level seems to be very low compared to the Italian medium level.
INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEM
In general Catania presents a good road network and this is very important to reach the most famous economic services, even it presents some problems connecting with railways network . The services offered by the airport seems to be very efficient, in fact it is located at the third place in Italy.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Life’s conditions in the province’s area aren’t very satisfying. It is in fact rapresented in the quality’s life indicators as one of the last Italian province. The Italian daily newspaper “ Il Sole 24 Ore” has located Catania at the 99th place in Italy, “ Legambiente” at the 102nd place and “ Italia Oggi” at the 88th place.
